Bubble Raider Facebook Based Bubble Shooter Puzzle Game

Bubble Raider is a Facebook-based bubble shooter puzzle game from UK-based developer PlayDemand. The game has been available since December of last year, but has been showing particularly strong growth since the beginning of May. At the time of writing, the game is the No. 11 top gainer by MAU this week with an increase of 220,000 (76%).

Bubble Raider’s basic mechanics are very conventional for the genre. Players fire bubbles from a cannon at the bottom of the screen using their mouse and must “pop” groups of three or more connected like-colored bubbles. Any bubbles which are no longer connected to the top of the screen after a group has been popped fall to the bottom and provide the player with a bonus. If the player takes too long to complete a level, the “ceiling” begins to descend, pushing the remaining bubbles further down. If the bubbles cross a line at the bottom of the screen, the level is over and the player must expend a life to try again.

Alongside the level-based mode, known as “Journey,” Bubble Raider also includes two additional ways of playing. “Time Attack” is a “blitz-style” mode, where players have a minute to score as many points as possible. In this mode, the ceiling does not descend, but clearing over half of the screen causes new groups of bubbles to scroll down, providing a potentially “infinite-length” level. Players are ranked against their friends on a weekly leaderboard in this mode, can send bragging Timeline posts to their friends and can make use of soft currency to purchase powerups — though the earning rate of this soft currency is very slow, making it practically essential to spend real money if players wish to take advantage of these boosters.

Flash 11.2 Security Updates And Fixes

Adobe has released an update for its popular Flash developer that addresses a critical security issue. According to the security bulletin page over at Adobe Support, the vulnerability is being exploited in the wild so Adobe has issued a security update for its Flash Player software that fixes two critical vulnerabilities in the widely-used program. At long last, this latest version also includes an auto-updating mechanism designed to streamline the deployment of Flash security fixes across multiple browsers. This does not mean that users who do not use Internet Explorer or work with different operating systems are safe from exploits, as the vulnerability exists on every system as well.

This is the third security update for Flash in the last six weeks. Flash Player v. 11.2 addresses a couple of bugs in Adobe Flash Player 11.1.102.63. Adobe warns that these vulnerabilities could cause a crash and potentially allow an attacker to take control of the affected system. Adobe has traditionally deployed two separate installers for Windows based systems: One for Flash on Internet Explorer, and another for non-IE browsers. With the release of Flash Player 11.2, Adobe is introducing a new background update mechanism to help Windows users while updating. The new Adobe Flash Player background updater updates all instances of a release version of Adobe Flash programmer for all Web browsers on a computer. Previously, users had to perform separate updates for each Web browser running on their system. If a vulnerable version of Adobe Flash Player is on a system, you are asked to upgrade to the latest version as soon as possible to protect the system from possible exploits.

After the introduction of the new background updater, Windows users have the option to download and install updates for Adobe Flash Player automatically, without user interaction. After a successful installation of Adobe Flash Player 11.2, users are presented with a dialog box to choose an update method. The following three update options are available to users:

* Install updates automatically when available (recommended)
* Notify me when updates are available
* Never check for updates (not recommended)

Additionally, the user can change his update preferences at any time via the Flash Player Settings Manager, which for Windows users can be accessed via the Control Panel. In the Flash Player Settings Manager, the update preferences can be found and selected in the Advanced tab under Updates.

Adobe Auditude is Adobes video ad management and monetization platform, helps media companies to dynamically insert, target and measure video ads efficiently. With the integration of Adobe AudienceManager and third party site data, publishers can better understand who is viewing the ad and target accordingly. Advancements to Partner Management tools enable content owners to better manage inventory distribution and revenue shares with syndication partners. Enhanced reporting tools give publishers the ability to access more detailed data on ad views, completion rates, location information and more.

Pot Farm review

Pot Farm from East Side Games and Brain Warp Studios has been available on Facebook for some time now — we last looked at it a whole two years ago — but the game has been seeing a surprising resurgence in popularity in recent months. At the time of writing, the game’s monthly active users figure is back up to 880,000 — closing in on the figure of a million MAU that we quoted in our review from 2010.

Pot Farm is a relatively simple farming game that casts players in the role of a bedraggled, bearded hippy running a “crop”-growing operation of questionable legality. The basic game flow revolves around players planting various crops, waiting for them to mature (or fertilizing them to make them grow instantly) and then harvesting them to sell and earn money.

The twist on the basic farming game formula is the fact that some of the fictional in-game crops are more illegal than others. Planting an illegal crop negatively impacts the player’s “protection” rating. If this stat drops to and remains at zero, the local park ranger will show up and confiscate the illegal plants if the player does not harvest them quickly enough. Since the illegal plants typically yield higher profits than the legal ones, players are encouraged to take this risk in order to build up their finances. Players may also build various structures to increase their protection, however, ranging from legal crops such as hops and corn to fir trees blocking the operation from prying eyes, angry bears and, oddly, inflatable sheep.

Stylista Fashion-themed Facebook game

Stylista is a fashion-themed Facebook game from Thai developer Sandbox Global. The title has been available in open beta for some time now, but showed up as the No. 4 top emerging Facebook game last week.

Stylista casts players in the role of a woman who’s recently arrive in New York and focuses on the growth of the player character’s “style” through shopping, decorating and social interactions. Gameplay largely revolves around visiting shops to purchase new clothing items and accessories, completing non-interactive real-time “jobs” to earn money and fulfilling the requirements for various quests in order to progress through the game’s light story.

The game begins with the player designing a custom avatar. This may only be female, though the player does not seem to be referred to by name at all in the game. A fairly limited choice of appearance options is provided at the outset, though players are able to unlock additional hair, eye, makeup and eyebrow styles as they progress through the game and earn money.

When shopping, players are able to “try on” various outfits simply by dragging them from the shop screen to their avatar, and then may purchase them using one of the game’s two currencies. Upon purchasing an item, players are rewarded with “style points,” which are used to unlock new districts and shops to visit. Hard currency items tend to offer considerably more style points than those purchased with soft currency. Hard currency may be acquired with Facebook Credits, credit card, mobile phone or PayPal, though for card, phone or PayPal payments the game’s interface only displays real money prices in Thai baht rather than dollars until the actual Facebook pay window pops up.

A lot of content in the game is friend-gated. An early quest requires players to invite a friend to the game in order to progress, and the expansion of the player’s room — required to store all their purchases — also requires the “assistance” of actively playing friends to complete, or the expenditure of hard currency.

Features Of Adobe Flash Player 11.3

Adobe Flash released a beta of their upcoming Flash Player Cyril- Flash Player 11.3. The 11.3 release focuses on adding a number of features that would make Flash a more attractive gaming platform. To this effect Flash developers have added support for streaming textures. Games running using Stage3D can now stream textures, starting with lower quality and increasing quality as the texture load.

Flash also adds support for keyboard input while in full screen mode. With this feature, games are essentially limited to windowed mode if they need any kind of keyboard control. Full screen input will ask the user for permission, since it has the potential for misuse.

A number of improvements to audio have also been made, with support for low latency audio in their streaming API. Low latency audio support has also been added to their Sound API. Native JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) support enables ActionScript Flash programmer take advantage of fast parsing and generation of JSON-formatted data. Existing data could be integrated with minimal or no modification to the ActionScript project. Other interesting new features include FrameLabel events, now quality for individual bitmaps can be changed with support of Bitmap.drawWithQuality, the release outside mouse event is back and Flash Player now supports native encoding of bitmap data to PNG, JPEG, and JPEG XR. The last one will greatly improve the performance of online image editors.

While Flash Player 11.2 introduced auto-updates for Windows, 11.3 introduce auto-update for Mac OSX as well. For this release of AIR, Adobe seems to have focused on mobile. A number of new features have been added to AIR:-

* AIR supports USB debugging of applications running on iOS devices.

* For AIR apps running on Android 4.0, Stylus support has been added.

* For those developing AIR applications for iOS on Mac OSX, the developer tools now support running AIR apps in the simulator.

* AIR apps are now better while running in the background. They can perform network operations in the background and get notifications when the app is about to be suspended.

Finally, for Flash developer of AIR applications for Mac OSX, AIR adheres better to Apple guidelines. The next Flash Player release code-named Dolores will focus on performance, after which there is to be a major revamp of the core language and runtime, which might just mean Flash Player 12. Flash animations and Flash introductions are intuitive and enable the creation of applications that demand user attention and can be easily integrated into Web applications to make them highly interactive.
